First, I could not remember any books that I have read through school. So I asked around for a book that wasn't to long so I could have it read before friday(1-30-10). My sister came through with a book that her boss had and was just raving about. This book is a true story about a man's life and how it ended in murder by the hands of the one he was madly in love with. My sister's boss new this man personally so she was happy to lend it to me so another person could relive his life and keep the memory alive. The book is based here in Havana, Illinois. The author of the book is the man's motherher name is Lola Cross and she tells the awful story of how her son was murdered just days before her birthday. The man's name is Troy Patton and the title is name "She blew him straight to Heaven". Lola starts the book off by telling a little of her life with Troy's older brother and sister. Then she goes on to when Troy was born and what he was like as a boy. She tells all of his daring stunts and how he loved to play tricks on everyone. She tells of all the good time and the bad times. Then she gets to the awful act of her daughter-in-law pulling a shot gun and blowing a large hole in the side of his head.
Lola tells of all the crazy fights the woman puts her son through. Troy loved his wife Janean very much but as her "crazy"( as his family put it) outburst got more and more frequent everyone got more and more scared for him. The book is a good one to read exspecially if you enjoy true stories. Lola tells of the awful phone call, trip to the hospital, seeing her son for the last time on his way to the life flight helicoptor, and the drive to St. Francis all to get there and discover her son did not make it. The tale of a mother losing a child, going through the pain and suffering, along with almost losing the rest of the family because of how hard she took it can relate to just about anyone who has lost someone extremley close to them. I as a mother can imagine just how hard it can be to lose your youngest, I would probably act the exact same way. My children are my world and I would be lost with out the both of them. I know I would go crazy and need serios help if that ever happened to me.
I guess I like this book because I can relate to it being a mom in all. I like to read about true stories to see how different people survive their worst times and to see how similar people are at the same time. I don't always like hearing someone was lost in the process but thing like that are what makes us grow and stronger than we were before. If anyone reading this blog likes true stories I suggest you give Lola's book about her beloved son a try. The book is a good one. Remeber it is titled " She Blew Him Striaght To Heaven" by Lola Cross.

Monica, do you think you'll choose a memoir (true story) as your second novel? I suggest Glass Castles. I think you'll like it...
